Part of SOS resources has been always been directed
towards training and education programmes. As early as 1982 the SOS
founder, Dr Tom Allan, brought together the Seasat community of
principal investigators from both sides of the Atlantic to report on
their findings of that mould-breaking mission. The book which resulted,
'Satellite Microwave Remote Sensing' was still in print long after the
launch of ESA's ERS-1 in 1991. SOS has organised a wide variety of
training programmes sponsored by UNESCO (IOC), UNDP, ESA and the EC.
These courses have led in some cases to the publication of dedicated
manuals and brochures. Some of the more notable courses run by SOS were:
- The future ERS-1 programme. Seminars on behalf of the
European Space Agency given in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Columbia,
Australia and Japan.
- Seminars sponsored by the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO held in Venezuela, Morocco, Pakistan
and Reunion. Published: IOC 'Guide to Marine Remote Sensing'.
- Training workshops sponsored by the United Nations
Development Programme held in Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Canaries.
Published the colour brochure 'Applications of Satellite
Remote Sensing over the Indian Ocean'. (52pp)
- Lecture tour sponsored by the British Council in
various space/oceanographic centres in Egypt and India.
- Workshop in Palermo, Sicily sponsored jointly by the
EC/ESA. Published 80-page colour brochure on 'Applications of
Satellite Remote Sensing over the Mediterranean Sea'.
- International forum organised by the Scientific
Committee for Oceanographic Research (SCOR WG70). Published the manual:
'Opportunities and problems in satellite measurements of the
sea' (UNESCO technical papers in Marine Sciences).
- SOS staff edited and contributed the first 3
chapters of a text-book directed at offshore engineers and naval
architects entitled 'Oceans from Space'. Sponsored
by the EC, the book contains 160 pages and is accompanied by a 45
minute video (see SUCCESS).
