The Clean Seas project had benefited enormously from the support, advice and
co-operation of many individuals and organisations over the past three years.
Principal amongst those are the members of the Steering Committee who have given
freely of their time to attend meetings and provide the guidance we required
to prioritise the task we had undertaken. We would like to thank David Palmer
of the UK Environment Agency, Juha-Markku Leppänen of the Finnish Institute
for Marine Research, Giuseppe Manzella of the European Topic Centre based at
ENEA, Nigel Carden of Thomas Miller P&I, David Bedborough and Kevin Colcomb
of the Marine Pollution Control Unit of the UK Coastguard, Gunnar Kullenberg
and later Colin Summerhayes of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission
and Guy Duchossois of the European Space Agency.
Data have been the lifeblood of this project and we are grateful to the agencies who have provided us with the instruments in space and the access to their data. We acknowledge the contributions made by the European Space Agency, NASA, NOAA, the German Space Agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation as well as commercial organisations involved in providing earth observation data such as Orbital Imaging. A particular note of thanks goes to the RAIDS , in particular Rob Freeman and Sheena Wing.
Supporting the technical work of the project, too many individuals have helped us out over the 36 months for us to mention them all here but would like to acknowledge those who have become closely involved in particular aspects of the work. Several individuals at organisations outside the project team have also been of enormous help, notably, Mati Kahru, Herbert Siegel, Andreas Kæstner, Walter Ott, Jens Popp, Bertil Håkansson and the two sets of 350 crews who participated in the Delphis campaigns. From within the organisations of the project partners, these have included Mark Keßler, Susanne Uferman, Daniel Gruber, Jochen Scholz, Marÿke Fox, Lisa Redbourn, Daniel Ballestero, Anne-Claire Morriconi, Inma Cantalapiedra, Camile Lecat, Juan-José Benjamin, Gerber van der Graaf, Brice Anselme, Tina Ekström, Bengt Lundén, Peter Land, Suzanne Kratzer, M. Armor, Leif Wastenson, Peter Challenor, Werner Alpers and Tom Allan.
We are also indebted to Alan Cross and Michel Schouppe and their organisation, the European Commission, who have helped us so much in delivering the findings contained within this report.
Finally, we must thank Jean-Pierre Massué of the Council of Europe whose initial letter to Tom Allan in 1995 proved to be the inspiration for the project objectives.
To all of you we offer our sincere gratitude.
