Projects: CAMMEO

 

CAMMEO, for Co-ordinated Approach to Markets for Marine Earth Observations, is a long term action under the ESA EO Market Development (EOMD) programme that began in November 2003 and runs for 2 years. The primary objective of CAMMEO is to increase the use of EO information on sea state in four key marine information services:

  • Marine meteorology for shipping
  • Information for search and rescue
  • Support for specialist marine operations
  • Statistics for design and certification

Seven partners are involved in CAMMEO: met.no (Norwegian Meteorological Service), C-MAP (Norway), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), IFREMER, ARGOSS, Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC), and SOS.

Near real-time information for shipping and other users - The Metoc system

The basis for CAMMEO near real-time services is the Metoc web mapping server (WMS) developed by CMR (Norway) and implememented by met.no. SOS provide satellite wind and wave data in near real-time and this is made available alongside a variety of forecasts.

Metoc is also the system used to provide information for search and rescue, through functionality to show results from ship and object drift modelling alongside the forecast and measured EO winds.


Near real-time information for specialist marine operations - The PrISM system

Certain marine operations, such as the deployment of submersibles or cable laying, are highly sensitive to sea state and require 'weather windows' in which to be conducted. The PrISM system uses EO enhanced wave forecasts together with ship response measurements to give the best possible monitoring of sea state in the ship's vicinity.

The system is being developed by Christophe Capitan in association with IFREMER to support specialist operations where sea state is a critical factor.


EO enhanced statistics for design and certification

For many years DNV have been using a wave database based on ship observsations (Global Wave Statistics) as the basis for products and recommendations for the design and certification of ships and offshore structures. This database (GWS) has been shown to lack accuracy for some applications.

The CAMMEO project has provided the opportunity to compare the existing products based on GWS with those derived from new data based on a combination of EO measurements and hindcast modelling. As a result there are moves to change practice and adopt the more accurate EO enhanced data as the basis for design and certification products.
