SCOOP Data Sets

The SCOOP project has evaluated the performance of two SAR mode (Delay Doppler) Altimeter Data sets.

The First SCOOP Test Data Set was designed to be an “equivalent” of the Sentinel-3 SRAL Baseline SAR mode altimeter product, generated using the ESA GPOD facility from Cryosat-2 L1B Baseline C data using the baseline Sentinel-3 SRAL SAR mode altimeter processing scheme. It has a DOI listing: 10.5270/esa-scoop-CR2-siral-2012_2016-v1.0_2020_12

The Second SCOOP Test Data Set incorporated  modifications to the Sentinel-3 SRAL baseline processing scheme, expected to improve the performance in open ocean and coastal zone applications. It has a DOI listing: 10.5270/esa-scoop-CR2-siral-2012_2016-v2.0_2020_12

These Data Pages provide information on these and the altimeter and auxiliary data sets used in the SCOOP project, including:

  • The SCOOP L1B and L2 SAR mode (Delay Doppler) Test Data Sets: RDSAR, L1B and L2.
  • Input data (Cryosat-2 SAR FBR and S3 SRAL simulations) required for producing the SCOOP test data sets.
  • Auxiliary data required for processing the SCOOP Test Data Sets.
  • Satellite, In-situ and model data used for validating the SCOOP Test Data Sets.

Regions of Interest

The SCOOP team has identified 10 Regions of Interest (ROI) for which Test Data Sets will be produced and for which the performance of these data sets will be analysed. These are indicated below on the version of the Cryosat-2 Mode Map (v3.4), which was in operation over 2012-2013 (the period for most of this first test data set).

Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD): A description of the Algorithms used in generating the SCOOP SAR altimeter products (RDSAR, L1B, L2 and Wet Troposphere Correction - WTC)

A seperate ATBD document describes the L2 processing for the Phase 2 SAR Test Data Set

Processing Options Configuration Control Document (POCCD): A description of the processing options used to produce the SCOOP SAR altimeter products (RDSAR, L1B, L2 and WTC)

Input Output Definition Document (IODD): A definition of Input and Output requirements for the SCOOP SAR altimeter products (RDSAR, L1B, L2 and WTC)

Product Specification Document (PSD): A specification for the SCOOP SAR altimeter products (RDSAR, L1B, L2 and WTC)
